D.C school administrators want to start the new school year August 14th. Naturally, many families have already made vacation plans. But the true stupidity is that half of the public schools have inadequate air conditioning. Normally they're not open in August, after all. When the temperatures frequently reach a hundred degrees, with high humidity.

It took me thirty seconds, after seeing the headline, to wonder about air conditioning. Is there an IQ test to become a D.C. public school administrator, and if so, what's the highest you're allowed to score before they won't hire you?

We do this here--start school around August 15, even though some of our schools have inadequate cooling, and even though evaporative cooling--which works fine in May (when school lets out) and June--doesn't work at all once you hit the July/August thunderstorm season, and the humidity goes up.

You're right. It is a bad idea. :-)
