Shopping lists generally don't make compelling LiveJournal entries, but I thought it might be interesting to give an example of what a week's worth of cooking looks like.

2.78 lbs. red potatoes
2 large onions
0.8 lb. dried split peas

1.1 lb. asparagus
2 1-lb. packages soft tofu

3 jars China Bowl chili puree with garlic

Garden of Eatin' blue tortilla chips
Kettle Chips, Salt and Pepper flavor
1 lb. sunflower seeds
0.46 lb. milk chocolate discs (41% cocoa)

1 package cucumber sushi

I'll use the potatoes to make big batches of potato curry and split pea soup. Both are good as leftovers. Possibly I'll slice a small potato up and fry it in a little olive oil for a snack.

The asparagus, I'll stir-fry, and add a splash of soy sauce when it's just tender. If I do it right, I'll just have time to coat the asparagus before the soy sauce evaporates. The tofu gets cooked with the chili puree. (The Whole Foods I usually shop at stopped carrying it, so when I saw it this time I stocked up. They have other chili pastes, but none of them taste nearly as good.) Both of these are very quick meals that involve almost no work.

The Garden of Eatin' chips are the best tortilla chips I've ever found. The Kettle Chips are very thick and probably not to everyone's taste. Sunflower seeds, always a good snack. The chocolate is sweeter than I like, but they don't have the darker stuff in bite-size pieces.

And the sushi was a quick lunch, which I ate even before leaving the store.

Of course I already had staples, like soda, canned soups and beans, and ice cream.

I happened to go shopping today. Was restocking after a couple of weeks away from home. I keep a lot of dry goods on hand for regular and special dietary requirement baking, (both friends and my mom can't eat gluten, and dad's diabetic, so I've become very good at accommodation cooking) plus lots o' dried beans. So today's shop was mostly for fresh fruit and veg, plus some staples. For these, I go to the local No Frills store. All of the cheap grocery store places in my part of the city have excellent produce sections. Where the selection is less abundant is in packaged and prepared foods. That suits me Just Fine.... it's better for my waistline. So: 1 head romaine lettuce 1 package washed spinach 1 lb., more or less of mushrooms 3 lb bag of carrots 1 lb bag of baby snack carrots 1 lb bag of parsnips 2 lbs. beets 1 pint container grape tomatoes 2 small heads broccoli 2 red peppers 1 bunch celery 1 bunch cilantro 6 navel oranges 1 lb strawberries 1 ginger root 3 heads garlic 3 lb container of three different trail mixes (different combos of fruit and nuts) 1 l skim millk, organic dairy 1 l tub fat free plain yoghurt, organic dairy 1 pkg of six knorr chicken bouillon cubes 1 lb turkey kielbasa (making borscht, yum, yum!) 1 dozen organic free range brown eggs 1 bottle fat free Kraft creamy ceasar dressing 1 box no name ceasar croutons 1 3/4 litre jar chunky hot salsa i large jar of unsweetened applesauce 1 box whole wheat spagetti 1 box whole wheat fusilli 1 box whole wheat rotini 1 small loaf sovital bread (made by local Future Bakery; sugar free, yeast free, gluten free rather dense and heavy multi-grain sourdough bread) 1 pkg. of six 10" tortillas i bag of six whole wheat pita breads 500 g tub grated parmesan I pkg. fresh Oliveri beef ravioli (treat!) i pkg. fresh Oliveri marinara sauce (treat!) 1 case Coca-Cola Zero (I'm a new convert... co-worker convinvced me to try this, and yes, I do like it better than the old diet Coke) This store didn't have maple syrup, a decent prepared pesto or the chamomile tea brand that I like (Celestial Seasonings Extra Sleepytime). That'll have to wait until a trip later in week to the 24 hour, higher end grocery at the foot of my street, or The Cheese Boutique across the river. Combined with what's already in the cupboard and fridge, that's a good two and a half weeks worth. I don't usually buy as much as that in one shot. I usually purchase fresh fruit and veg once to twice a week.

I hate it when I lay things out carefullly in the window, and then the web interface runs things all together.
