A Week's Food
Jan. 22nd, 2006 06:56 pmShopping lists generally don't make compelling LiveJournal entries, but I thought it might be interesting to give an example of what a week's worth of cooking looks like.
2.78 lbs. red potatoes
2 large onions
0.8 lb. dried split peas
1.1 lb. asparagus
2 1-lb. packages soft tofu
3 jars China Bowl chili puree with garlic
Garden of Eatin' blue tortilla chips
Kettle Chips, Salt and Pepper flavor
1 lb. sunflower seeds
0.46 lb. milk chocolate discs (41% cocoa)
1 package cucumber sushi
I'll use the potatoes to make big batches of potato curry and split pea soup. Both are good as leftovers. Possibly I'll slice a small potato up and fry it in a little olive oil for a snack.
The asparagus, I'll stir-fry, and add a splash of soy sauce when it's just tender. If I do it right, I'll just have time to coat the asparagus before the soy sauce evaporates. The tofu gets cooked with the chili puree. (The Whole Foods I usually shop at stopped carrying it, so when I saw it this time I stocked up. They have other chili pastes, but none of them taste nearly as good.) Both of these are very quick meals that involve almost no work.
The Garden of Eatin' chips are the best tortilla chips I've ever found. The Kettle Chips are very thick and probably not to everyone's taste. Sunflower seeds, always a good snack. The chocolate is sweeter than I like, but they don't have the darker stuff in bite-size pieces.
And the sushi was a quick lunch, which I ate even before leaving the store.
Of course I already had staples, like soda, canned soups and beans, and ice cream.
