Because
tiernaywest intimidates me.
1. Total number of books I've owned:
Oh, like I can possibly keep count. I think there are about 3000 books in my apartment right now, so the total is probably around five or six thousand.
2. Last book I bought:
Vegetarian Europe, in preparation for my trip to Budapest. Unfortunately the chapter on Hungary is only two pages long, and lists four restaurants. I'll be there a week. I suspect I may buy most of my food in grocery stores—Hungarian cuisine does not have a strong vegetarian tradition. (The first line of most recipes is, "First, fry some bacon." Which, as a classmate pointed out, is not what we in America call bacon—here, we call that "fat".)
At the same time I ordered too late to die young by Harriet McBride Johnson, Waist-High in the World by Nancy Mairs, and Make Them Go Away: Clint Eastwood, Christopher Reeve, and the Case Against Disability Rights by Mary Johnson. Buying four books when I need one is the reason my apartment contains 3000 books.
3. Last book I read:
Newton's Wake by Ken MacLeod. A very enjoyable space opera, but it didn't feel as groundbreaking as his earlier works.
4. 5 books that mean a lot to me:
Star Surgeon by Alan Nourse, the first science fiction book I enjoyed reading, and The Rolling Stones by Robert Heinlein, which got me hooked on the genre.
The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz, the story of a group of soldiers who escaped from a prison camp in Siberia and hiked to British India, thousands of miles away. A reminder of how much the human body is capable of, and the importance of perseverance.
The Walls Came Tumbling Down by Henriette Roosenburg, the story of a Dutch resistance fighter's stay in a German prison camp, and her journey home through post-war Europe. I admire tremendously those who fought the Nazis from within occupied Europe.
In Search of Wonder by Damon Knight, an outstanding work of criticism.
