Habemus Papam
Sep. 16th, 2011 03:43 pmI'm now up to a Top Five list (with ten films to go before my festival's over).
Habemus Papam is Latin for "We have a Pope." These are the final words spoken after the election of a new Pope, before he steps onto the balcony to introduce himself to the faithful. At this moment in the film, the newly elected Pope breaks down, crying "I can't do it! I can't do it!"—which is naturally very awkward for everyone concerned. The College of Cardinals is forbidden contact with the outside world until a new Pope is elected and announced, so until His Holiness finds the confidence to accept his new role, they're trapped in seclusion, and the outside world has no idea what's going on. It's very funny and very sad at the same time. If I had to pick one film I've seen so far to be a big hit, it would be this one. (Although the ending is, I think, probably going to be unsatisfying to a lot of people, so perhaps I'm wrong. My capacity to predict public opinion is boundless in its capacity for error.)
