Wrist Surgery
Nov. 19th, 2004 08:37 pmAs some of you know, I had wrist surgery this afternoon. It seems to have gone well; the nerve block is just beginning to wear off, and I've taken Vicodin preemptively. I can barely wiggle one of my fingers, so I'm typing this one-handed. Expect brevity.
This is the first operation I've had with a full nerve block. Before I started taking Enbrel I couldn't lift my arm enough. I literally couldn't feel a thing, except at a couple points where it felt like they were using a hammer and chisel on my bones. Even then, all I felt was the impact, not the pain. It was more unpleasant while they were injecting the anesthetic (55 cc's!) and using electric shocks to see how well it was working. (If they could make my hand twitch, they needed to pump more in.)
My wrist will stay in a cast for six weeks, more or less. Tedious, but I'll manage. I'll take it easy for at least a week or so. Thanksgiving week is a good time to lie around doing nothing.
I stocked up on foods from Fresh Fields before I came out here, so I have plenty of stuff that's easy to eat and easy on the stomach. I had some penne pasta in pesto sauce as soon as I got home, along with some herbal tea, then napped for an hour, then had a more substantial meal of hummus with pita chips, taboulleh, and stuffed grape leaves, with more herbal tea. Now I'll read a bit and lie down a while longer. Probably I'll update again tomorrow.
