Nov. 25th, 2003 12:42 amThe book I uploaded for Project Gutenberg has sparked a discussion in the Distributed Proofreading forum about proper HTML style, and until it's settled one way or the other I'll hold off on uploading any more. I have proofread another one, though.
In hindsight, I shouldn't have tried to start writing a novel the same month I got interested in a new hobby. I was eager to spend my time proofreading, not writing, and after a couple of weeks I quietly set my writing aside, for the time being only. When working on Project Gutenberg has become more routine I will make another attempt at writing. Next time, I do want to spend more time preparing. I really only had an idea for one plot thread when I started, and the setting was way underdeveloped. I also want to avoid procrastinating too much; it's a delicate balancing act.
My scanner should ship this week, so I'll spend December happily scanning books. So far I've ordered books from the United States, Canada, England, and Ireland, and I almost ordered an Anthony Trollope novel from France before I found out shipping was $13. (I'm still considering it; adding Mr. Scarborough's Family to Project Gutenberg ought to be worth $27.) I either have, or have on their way, books by Anthony Trollope, Ferenc Molnar, R. Austin Freeman, Arthur Train, and Jane Austin, who wrote a novel about the Pilgrims. I have juveniles from around 1910 on The Boy With the U.S. Census, The Boy With the U.S. Fisheries, and The Boy With the U.S. Foresters. I have a history of the Paris Commune and the life of a missionary in India. I have several facsimiles and reprints that I think will probably clear. I should be enjoyably busy for a while.
Update: The copy of Dr. Wortle's School I ordered from Ireland was already sold or something, so I decided to splurge on the copy of Mr. Scarborough's Family from France. After the rotten day I've had, I deserve a treat.
